THEME: O’ LORD, HEAL OUR LAND – 2 KINGS 2:19 – 22

INTRODUCTION AND SALUTATION:

I thank the Almighty God for giving me the grace to be here today with the blessed people of God. I thank my Lord Bishop the Rt. Revd. Prof. E. F. Oladapo Asaju and Mama Ilesa, Bar. Mrs. H. S. Dapo Asaju for this privilege. I take it not for granted to stand before great men of God. I am sincerely grateful sir and ma. I also thank our rivered fathers in God: The Archdeacons, Canons and the Reverends. People of God I thank you all.

The healing of the Waters of Jericho took place (B.C. 895.)

The healing of the waters and the barren land in Jericho was a remarkable miracle in the Bible. 2 kings 2:19 – 22 recorded the event for us.

“And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren. 20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.  22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake” (2 Ki 2:19-25).

THE THEME FOR THIS GATHERING IS VERY MUCH TIMELY

  • Elisha has just returned to Jericho from Jordan
  • Where he just received the “Double portion of Elijah’s anointing”
  • When the men of the city of Jericho came to him with their grievances
  • They said to him, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth:
  • but the water is naught…
  • and the ground barren…
  • as it was in Jericho, so it is with our land, Nigeria
  • Nigeria is richly blessed by God, but…
  • We have oil but…
  • We have land mass, but…
  • We have so many universities, but…
  • We have everything, but…

  1. THE CITY OF JERICHO:
  • In the book of Joshua 6, God asked the children of Israel to take over the city of Jericho
  • This city was taken in a very remarkable manner by the Israelites (Josh 6).
  • God gave it into their hands. Just by shouting seven Halleluiahs after marching round it
  • Seven times each day for 7 days
  • God Commanded them to destroy All the inhabitants
  • And all the spoil of the city was to be destroyed,
  • “Only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron” were reserved
  • And were “put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah” (Josh 6:24; comp. Num 31:22,23,50-54).
  • Only Rahab “and her father’s household, and all that she had,” were preserved from destruction,
  • According to the promise of the spies (Josh 2:14).

  1. THE PROBLEM WITH JERICHO
  • Jericho was built in disobedience to the command of God.
  • “And Joshua adjured them at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: he shall lay the foundation thereof in his firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.” Joshua 6:26
  • Fools, they say, build houses for wise men to dwell in.
  • Also, the wealth of the sinner provided a habitation for the just.

  1. PROPHET ELISHA PROVIDED THEM WITH SOLUTION TO THEIR PROBLEMS
  • God’s faithful prophets love to be employed. Get them involved in your matter.
  • It takes wisdom to make use of them during the little while that their light is with us.
  • They did not complain to Elijah concerning the matter, perhaps because he was not so easily accessible as Elisha was.
  • Man, of God how easily accessible are you?
  • But they now hope, by the influence of the divinity-school in their city
  • Hope that they would be reformed. Someone is going to be reformed here today

  1. AND FOR ELISHA TO HEAL THEIR WATERS.
  • For Elisha to heal their Land and water, they must furnish him with the following items.
  • One, they must furnish him with SALT in a NEW CRUSE, v
  • what can a small quantity of salt in small jar do in a stream?
  • But those to be helped must be employed and have their faith and obedience tried.
  • Sometimes it will cost you something special to receive your miracles
  • God’s works of grace are done, not by any human power, but in observance to His commands.
  • Two, He cast the salt into the spring of the waters, and so healed the streams and the ground they watered.
  • Therefore, hear me, the way to reform men’s lives is to renew their hearts.
  • For you to be reformed, your heart must first be renewed.
  • Let those hearts be seasoned with the salt of grace; for out of them are the issues of life.
  • Make the tree good and the fruit will be good.
  • Purify the heart and that will cleanse the hands.

  1. ELISHA DID NOT PRETEND TO DO THIS BY HIS OWN POWER
  • “And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.” 2 Kings 2:20-21
  • Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters;
  • There shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
  • Elisha did not pretend to do this by his own power, but in God’s name:
  • So many prophets, pastors, priests and Evangelists are guilty of this.
  • Elisha said, “THUS SAITH THE LORD, I HAVE HEALED THESE WATERS.”
  • And I say unto you, Thus said the Lord God, I have healed you…
  • He knew that he was just an instrument in the hands of God,
  • The channel through which God is pleased to convey this healing virtue.
  • By doing them this kindness with a “Thus saith the Lord,” they would be more willing hereafter,
  • To receive from God a reproof, admonition, or command, with the same preface.
  • If, in God’s name, he can help them, in God’s name he can teach and rule them also.
  • “Thus, saith the Lord,” out of Elisha’s mouth, must, forever, be a mighty force with them.

  1. THE HEALING OF THE WATER AND THE LAND WAS PERMANENT.
  • The waters were healed unto this day, v. 22.

“It shall be permanent 2x

what the Lord has done me, it shall be permanent …”

  • What God does shall be forever, Eccl 3:14. “I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.”
  • When God, by His Spirit, heals a soul, there shall be no more death nor barrenness; the property is altered: what was useless and offensive becomes grateful and serviceable.

  1. CONCLUSION:

I prophesy into your life, family, business, office, ministry…Healing galore…
